What is Falafel?
Falafel are fried balls or fritters that features heavily in Middle Eastern cuisine. Often made of broad beans (also known as fava beans), chickpeas, or a combination of the two, they’re mixed with a variety of herbs and spices. While canned chickpeas are sometimes used in a falafel mixture, most recipes recommend using dried chickpeas that are soaked overnight. Canned chickpeas are pre-cooked and can cause your falafel mixture to become mushy. Falafel is a common street food in the Middle East and gets bonus points for being both vegetarian and gluten-free! Falafel balls are also high in protein and fibre, helping you feel fuller and more satisfied for longer.
You can certainly make your own falafel from scratch, using dried chickpeas, spices, fresh herbs, and baking powder that you then fry in hot oil, or you can pick up our Falafel with Tahini, which is made from scratch by our chefs from the highest quality of ingredients for maximum convenience. Our Falafel with Tahini is made with chickpeas, spices, chickpea flour, and baking powder. This makes the falafel balls light, crispy, and fluffy—perfect for this falafel wrap recipe! Included is our tahini sauce, made with ground sesame, salt, and water for extra flavour and nuttiness. We baked ours in the oven for a healthier alternative to the traditional deep-fried method of preparation.
What You’ll Need to Make This Falafel Wrap
This falafel wrap recipe comes together with just a few simple ingredients and minimal prep work. Everything you need can be found at your local Farm Boy, where we strive to provide our customers with the highest quality of ingredients at an excellent value. What you’ll need to make these falafel wraps are:
Falafel: Naturally, you’ll need falafel to make falafel wraps! These chickpea fritters are gluten-free, vegetarian, and totally delicious. You can make homemade falafel from scratch if you feel like breaking out the food processor (and a copious amount of hot oil), or you can pick up our chef-prepared Falafel with Tahini. Made fresh with minimal ingredients, it’s a delicious and convenient option (and the one we’ve used in this falafel wrap recipe).
Naan: Some recipes call for pita bread or even tortillas when it comes to their falafel wraps. For this recipe, we’ve opted to use our Flame Baked Original Naan. It’s soft, fluffy, and won’t tear when rolled to wrap up all the goodness inside. Our naan is stone-baked the traditional way to maintain its taste and texture, and it has the slightest tang from buttermilk that we think complements the falafel.
Tabouleh: A traditional Middle Eastern salad, tabouleh (also spelled “tabbouleh”) contains a base of chopped fresh parsley and cracked wheat or bulgur. We’ve included it in this falafel wrap recipe for added colour, texture, and authentic flavour. Farm Boy™ Tabouleh is made fresh in small batches by our chefs using only natural ingredients. It’s delicious all on its own or served in wraps like these!
Cucumbers: Get your crunch on! We love the refreshing, crisp flavour of cucumber in these falafel wraps. We’ve recommended thinly slicing your cucumber for this recipe, but you can also grate them or cut them julienne for an even thinner texture that ensures added crunch in every bite.
Tomatoes: For some added juiciness to your falafel wrap, chop up some tomatoes. We’ve used grape tomatoes, but you can use whatever type of tomato you like. Tomato slices are a great way to add some moisture to this falafel wrap recipe, as well as a pop of colour.
Red Onions: Thinly sliced red onions are a traditional ingredient in falafel wraps. They’re a little sweet and a little tangy, with that all-important crunch. If you have a bit of extra time on your hands, you can make quick pickled red onions with Farm Boy™ White Wine Vinegar, Farm Boy™ Golden Maple Syrup, and salt. Even faster is our no-cook recipe for Sumac Onions, which uses chopped fresh parsley, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil, salt, and Farm Boy™ Sumac Seasoning for a bright, citrusy flavour.
Tahini: Our creamy Tahini sauce is made with just a few simple ingredients. It has a wonderfully nutty flavour that pairs perfectly with falafel. Regular tahini is made with just one ingredient—ground sesame seeds—but our tahini sauce is thinned with water and lemon juice for some added brightness and an easily drizzled consistency.
Filling Ideas for Falafel Wraps
Looking to add even more flavour to your falafel wraps? Any of the items below would be an excellent addition to this recipe:
Hummus: Double down on chickpea power by using hummus in this falafel wrap recipe! Spread some hummus on the bottom of your wrap before placing the falafel balls on top. At Farm Boy, we have a variety of hummus flavours, all made with simple ingredients. Choose from options like Authentic Lebanese, Lemon Garlic, Roasted Garlic, Roasted Red Pepper, or Spicy.
Pickles: Many beloved sandwiches include pickles, so why not add pickles to a falafel wrap? Tangy and acidic, they also give some extra crunch to this recipe. We recommend using our Organic Sliced Dill Pickles for a deliciously briny flavour.
Tzatziki: Cool and creamy, this Middle Eastern spread is made with sour cream, cucumber, garlic, and mint. It’s fresh, cooling, and herbaceous—all delicious elements to add to your falafel wrap. Spread it on the bottom of your wrap or spoon some overtop the falafel balls. You can add our Tzatziki to your wrap in addition to your hummus, or instead of—whatever you like best!
Lettuce: Need a little more freshness in your falafel wrap? Fresh lettuce is a great way to add some more vibrance to this recipe, as well as crunch and moisture. Chop up your lettuce before adding it to your wrap.
Other Ways to Serve Falafel
Beyond the traditional falafel wrap, there are plenty of other delicious ways to serve falafel balls or patties. Whether you use fried falafel or baked falafel, either method of preparation is delicious! A few of our recommended ways to serve this Middle Eastern treat are:
On a Platter: Skip the pita bread entirely and think of this falafel platter as a deconstructed falafel wrap! On a large plate or serving tray, arrange your falafel balls and add fresh veggies, pickles, and sauces like hummus, tzatziki, or tahini.
With Dip: Maybe you’re just not feeling veggies one day. That’s okay! Falafel is packed with plant-based protein and fibre, making it a delicious option for anyone’s dietary needs. Opt to serve your falafel patties with a side of hummus, tzatziki, or baba ganoush for dipping. Farm Boy™ Baba Ganoush is made with simple, natural ingredients like roasted eggplant, tahini, sunflower oil, and seasonings for a rich, smoky taste.
Make it a Salad: Pair your falafel balls with Farm Boy™ Tabouleh for a simple, chef-prepared dish that’ll keep you feeling full and satisfied. Drizzle the included tahini sauce on top for an extra flavour boost.
Try it in a Bowl: You can easily make your own falafel bowl by using the ingredients in this recipe here and enjoying it over cooked rice! A simple, make-ahead meal that’s perfect for lunch or busy weeknights, you can customize it to suit your dietary needs. If that sounds like too much work, visit our Chef’s Market to pick up a chef-prepared Falafel Bowl! Made daily with fresh ingredients, this vegetarian bowl contains rice, falafel, tomatoes, corn, chickpeas, red cabbage, olives, kale, and feta cheese. Easy to enjoy on the go, try it hot or cold!
