Types of Plant-Based Protein

There are many types of plant-based protein, including nuts and nut butters, seeds, soy products, legumes, and more. Some of the ones used in our recipes are:

Tofu

Tofu is a product made from condensed soy milk. It’s pressed into blocks in varying degrees of softness. Tofu has almost no taste on its own and instead takes on the flavour of whatever it’s cooked in or seasoned with. It’s high in protein, low in fat, and a versatile ingredient that can be used in everything from soups to desserts. At Farm Boy, we’re proud to continue to expand our line of plant-based products. We now offer Farm Boy™ Organic Tofu in Firm, Extra Firm, Silken, and Herb varieties.

Tempeh

Tempeh is another soy-based product. However, it’s not made from condensed soy milk. Instead, tempeh is crafted from compressed fermented soybeans and minimally processed. The fermentation of the soybeans allows for easier digestion and nutrient absorption. Tempeh is also higher in fibre and protein than tofu. It has a firmer, chewier texture and holds up well to cooking methods like grilling and frying.

Seitan

Seitan is a plant-based food made from wheat gluten, which means it’s not suitable to those who have Celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. It has a firm, chewy texture that many liken to chicken, which makes it a great meat-free substitute for recipes that use poultry. Like tofu, seitan absorbs flavours from sauces and seasonings extremely well. It’s high in protein while being low in carbohydrates and fat.

Lentils

Lentils are a legume that are a dietary staple across may cuisines and cultures. They have a mild, earthy, and nutty flavour. They are frequently sold dry and need to be rehydrated in recipes or canned. There are lots of types of lentils in various colours like green, red, yellow, brown, and black. Certain recipes will call for certain types of lentils owing to the differences in flavour and texture (so check first to be sure!). Lentils are high in fibre and protein while being low in calories and fat.

Beans

There are lots of beans that are sources of plant-based protein. Beans are also legumes and include split peas, chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans, cannellini beans, and many more. Budget-friendly and versatile, beans are a popular choice for many plant-based eaters. They’re an excellent source of different vitamins and minerals as well as protein and fibre. The accessibility of beans also makes them a great choice for those who may have limited shopping options in their community.
