What’s in Season: Fall

When the weather gets cooler and the days get shorter, it means it’s finally fall! Alongside infinity scarves and Halloween movie marathons, there’s all the delicious autumn produce that has arrived. Farm Boy stores are stocked with juicy apples, colourful pumpkins, tart cranberries, and so much more! Read on to discover what’s been freshly harvested.

Apples

From baking and snacking to salads and sauces, apples are one of the biggest signifiers that fall has arrived! Some of the most popular varieties include McIntosh, Empire, and Spartan.

Cranberries

Traditionally used in sauce for your holiday spread, these little gems are also delicious in muffins, pies, and tarts! (Or as a garnish for a cocktail made with our Organic Sparkling Water!)

Pears

Available through to December, pears are packed with vitamin C, potassium, and fibre. Three of the most popular varieties are the sweet Bartlett, the aromatic Anjou, and the crunchy Bosc.

Plums

Blue or red, plums should be allowed to ripen at room temperature before eating. If you’re planning to use them in pies, tarts, or canning, blue plums (also known as European plums) are best.

Vegetables

Beets

You don’t have to be a Dwight Schrute to know how to use beets! A root veggie that needs to be cooked, beets can be boiled or baked and added to soups or salads.

Broccoli

You’ll often find broccoli in produce aisles year-round thanks to greenhouse growing, but they actually come into season in the fall! A staple of any crudité, this flowery veggie can also be sauteed, stir-fried, steamed, and more!

Cabbage

Pickled or in salads, cabbage is an unexpected delight! Try pairing the purple kind with another fall fave: apples (like in our Farm Boy™ Red Cabbage with Apples Salad). Making a slaw from scratch? We recommend our Creamy Coleslaw and Apple Cider Coleslaw Dressings.

Carrots

Another root veg that shines in the fall, look for carrots that don’t have green “shoulders” and aren’t too large to get the sweetest bite. Enjoy them raw, roasted, or pickled!

Pumpkin

Autumn is the season of pumpkin spice and everything nice! In addition to making beautiful holiday décor, pumpkins are an excellent source of vitamins and taste just as delicious in baked goods as they do in savoury items like sauces and soups.

Squash

More than some colourful accompaniments to your Thanksgiving table, squash comes in loads of variety this season. Some of our faves include acorn, buttercup, and butternut!

Zucchini

A veg that might seem summery but also tastes delicious when the wind gets chilly, it’s zucchini! If you’re still hankering for a BBQ, it tastes great on the grill, but can also be sauteed or spiralized into a low-carb pasta substitute.
