Chili is one of those rich, hearty, wholesome dishes that work for any season, but they’re especially satisfying when it’s cold outside (or chilly, if you like). One of the best things about chili is its versatility; it can be made pretty much any way you like! While some believe that no chili should have beans (like Texas’s chili con carne), and others think that a true chili requires meat (our plant-based options would beg to differ), this comfort food is a classic no matter how you serve it.
While you can always make a big batch in your slow cooker or Dutch oven, you can also visit your nearest Farm Boy to pick up some delicious chili ready-made! Prepared in small batches by our chefs, they’re simmered with traditional spices and simple, wholesome ingredients. Choose from meaty Beef, nutritious Quinoa Veggie, or vitamin-packed Sweet Potato & Black Bean.
After you’ve selected (or cooked) up a tasty bowl, the next step is to top it! From classic toppings to more unusual (but no less delicious) flavour profiles, we have 10 different ways to upgrade your chili. Find everything you need at Farm Boy stores and score the spiciest deals in our flyer!

Classic Chili
Some may call it basic, but we call it classic. Garnishing a delicious bowl of hearty chili with traditional toppings is an easy way to transform good chili into great chili. The cooling creaminess of sour cream helps subdue the spicy notes in your bowl, while our Organic Medium Cheddar Cheese is a natural accompaniment. (Really, is there anything cheese can’t do?) Finish your chili with some freshly chopped green onions and a spritz of lime. These additions can brighten up meaty or spicy chili without competing with other flavours.
Vegan Chili
If you’re scooping up a bowl of plant-based chili—like our Sweet Potato & Black Bean or Quinoa Veggie options—you’ll want toppings to match. Our Roasted Corn & Black Bean Salsa is made fresh in the Farm Boy Kitchen with simple, natural ingredients. Sweet, juicy corn helps temper the spice while mixed peppers add some colour and nutrition. Add some sliced or cubed fresh avocado for a creamy, cooling effect, and our Natural Tortilla Chips. Made in Ontario, they provide a nice textural contrast and crunch to hearty chili.
Mexican-Style Chili

Chili is believed to have originated somewhere along the Texas-Mexico border, which is what inspired this selection of chili toppings. Enhance the authentic flavours of your bowl with our Mexican-style Cotija, a crumbly, salty, and tangy cheese. Then, add some freshness with our house-made Pico de Gallo, avocado, and cilantro, all of which can be found in your local Farm Boy store. Finally, keep things interesting with the crunch of tortilla chips. In addition to the classic flavour, they’re also available in Ancient Grains, Blue Corn, Lime, and Zesty Cheese.
Five-Alarm Chili
If you’ve ever taken a bite of chili and thought, “Hmm, this could be hotter”, then these are the toppings for you! Add some extra spice to your chili with a few dashes (or more) of any of our hot sauces. Made locally with real ingredients in a variety of different flavours, they’ll bring the tongue-tingling taste you’ve been missing. Up the ante even more with some sliced jalapeño peppers (or pick up our pickled Jalapeños). Finally, if you’re still craving some heat but love the taste of cheese, our Fiesta Blend—with a mix of Monterey Jack, hot Havarti, and hot pepper brick—is here to answer the call.
Burger Chili

A hearty bowl of beef chili is just begging for extra toppings—burger toppings, that is. Transform your chili into something burger-adjacent with salty, cheesy, and savoury ingredients. Any burger worth the bite deserves cheese and bacon. In addition to our Organic Old Cheddar Cheese (which is lactose-free for those with sensitivities), our Maple Wood Smoked Bacon has just a hint of sweetness that balances the chili’s heat. Add some freshness and acidity with some diced tomatoes (not the canned kind). Tomatoes do some heavy lifting when it comes to adding vibrancy to a bowl of meaty chili. Finally, sprinkle in some texture with our Crispy Fried Onions, made with only onions and sunflower oil.
Middle Eastern-Inspired Chili

Chili has a wide selection of regional variations. In Texas, chili con carne is popular; Ohio prefers “Cincinnati-style” chili, served over spaghetti; and New Mexico prefers a chili verde. So, why not add some international flair to chili toppings, as well? Our Middle Eastern-inspired chili takes the same basic topping ideas, but gives them a twist. Our house-made Tzatziki blends tangy sour cream with cucumbers and garlic, while our Barrel Aged Feta offers a crumbly tang, similar to classic cotija. For a little freshness, cucumbers and parsley take the lead. Finally, if you’re looking for a touch of heat that doesn’t compete, try our Harissa Seasoning Mix. A blend of cayenne, paprika, and cumin makes it not so different from traditional chili spices.
Healthy Chili

Occasionally—and undeservedly—chili can get a bad rap. With its fibre-rich beans and protein-packed meats, it’s not ideal for those with smaller appetites. However, if you’d prefer a lighter, brighter chili that’s not weighed down with heavy toppings, this is the combo for you. Fresh avocado takes the place of sour cream or cheese, offering a similar texture and cooling sensation. Chopped green onions provide a dose of much-needed freshness, especially if your bowl is on the spicy side. Finally, finish with classic cilantro and lime. These two are a traditional flavour pairing when it comes to chili, and they offer a nice lift and acidity to a bowl of the good stuff.
Inside-Out Jalapeño Popper

Jalapeño poppers—those bite-sized, deep-fried, ooey-gooey appetizers—provide delicious inspiration when it comes to chili toppings. With your bowl of chili as your canvas, bring the best elements of these beloved pub snacks to life. In addition to jalapeño peppers (of course), we’ve added our Lightly Seasoned Croutons to mimic the crunch of those deep-fried delights. Crumbled bacon provides a smoky, savoury edge, and that delectable cheese gets absolutely transformed. Like the melty cheese in those pepper pockets, we recommend warming and thinning our Cream Cheese until it’s at a drizzling consistency. (This can be achieved by adding just a touch of milk). Pour over your chili and dig in!
All Dressed
Sometimes when you’re craving chili, you want big, bold flavours. You don’t want meek, passive spices or toppings that can’t hold up to the meaty bowl. When it’s time for chili, it’s go big or go home. This flavour combo has all your bases covered: There’s sour cream, a classic and a must-have for its creamy, cooling abilities. There’s bacon, because what doesn’t taste better with some delicious crumbled bacon on top? We have shredded cheese because, like bacon, it makes everything taste that much yummier. Chopped green onions, cilantro, and lime add brightness, tang, acidity, and colour. Then, to really bring it home, we have our Potato Puffs. These pillowy pockets of potato-y goodness are your starch, your crunch, and your vehicle for extra deliciousness in every spoonful. What more could you ask for?
Upside Down Chili Cheese Fries
Chili fries are a delicious dish to enjoy when you’re craving something salty, starchy, and hearty (and maybe not entirely healthy). We’ve upended the idea of chili fries with this delicious chili recipe that sees the fries become the topping rather than the base. You can use any cheese you like, but we like the bounce and stretchy melt that comes from cheese curds. You can even make this version entirely plant-based by used our Poutine-Style Curd Cheese Alternative atop either of our vegan chilis. Finish with chopped chives and a few sprigs of fresh parsley and enjoy!
Ways To Use Leftover Chili
Hot Dogs
A carnival or fair staple, chili dogs are a messy, decadent, and oh-so-satisfying dish that conjures up images of childhood. Leftover chili can easily be repurposed to top grilled hot dogs, packing a major protein punch. Check out our recipe for Grilled Chili Dogs, which sees our All Beef Frankfurters get the gourmet treatment with a multitude of toppings, including our Sweet Potato & Black Bean Chili. Since we have plant-based chili options are well as meaty ones, everyone can enjoy this indulgent dish!

Nachos
Nachos are a Tex-Mex favourite, so they would naturally make a delicious pairing with another Tex-Mex classic, chili. While we love peppers, cheese, salsa, and sour cream as much as the next person on our nachos, we also love increasing our protein intake by adding a scoop or two of chili. This transforms nachos from an appetizer into a main course. Pro tip to keep your nachos from getting soggy from the chili: add a layer of cheese to your chips first, bake for a few minutes, then load ‘em up!

Fries
Chili cheese fries are a classic, indulgent way to use up any leftover chili. The combination of hot fries, melty cheese, and savoury, spicy chili is undeniably delicious. Even though straight-cut fries are the norm for this dish, why not expand your culinary horizons and try something different? Our Waffle-Cut Fries provide more surface area for all those delicious toppings, while our Sweet Potato Fries offer a sweet, earthy contrast. Or, add some colour to your plate with our Rainbow Veggie Fries, a blend of carrots, parsnips, and beets. Our fries are expertly coated for an irresistible crunch that’ll keep them crispy (even when you ladle on the chili.)

Baked Potatoes
Baked potatoes are a blank canvas for toppings, and so leftover chili is really able to shine on these starchy spuds. A spoonful of chili, some grated cheese, a dollop of sour cream, and some chopped green onions and you have a side dish that’s become a full meal. You can even keep it totally plant-based with one of our vegan chilis and cheese-style alternatives.
