Good Food from Good Neighbours

Sourcing from local farmers and producers is an incredibly important part of “The Farm Boy Way”. Uplifting our communities is something we value immensely. A part of that means supporting Canadian businesses! We do this by carrying Canadian products, holding community events, offering demo tastings, and more. Ultimately this can help strengthen our food security and sustainability efforts across the country.

That’s why we work with companies like Dutchman’s Gold, a family-owned and -operated business that shares our passion for community and bringing customers wholesome, high-quality products.

Within this honeysweet blog, we’ll show you what’s buzzing at Dutchman’s Gold!

“As a mom, a second-generation business owner, and someone deeply passionate about food and sustainability, I’m proud to work with partners like Farm Boy who are truly walking the talk when it comes to local, clean, purpose-driven products.”

— Angela Ysseldyk, Co-Owner of Dutchman’s Gold

Dutchman’s Gold: The Family Hive

Started by Master Beekeeper John Van Alten in 1981 in the quaint town of Carlisle, Ontario, Dutchman’s Gold began as a small porch-front operation selling bottled honey to the local community. Since then, it’s grown into a globally recognized producer of award-winning honey, maple syrup, and a variety of beehive wellness and supplement products. Despite the growth, this second-generation family business remains true to its humble roots. Dutchman’s Gold continues to craft top-quality products that are minimally processed and as pure as possible.

Angela and Mark Ysseldyk, Co-Owners of Dutchman’s Gold, with their two children.

Today, Dutchman’s Gold is led by John’s daughter Angela and her husband Mark. Together, they’ve grown the business from its small-town roots to sharing their liquid gold with customers around the world. From selling honey on the front porch as a kid to helping run the show today, Angela’s been buzzing around the family business from the very start. Now, she and Mark are leading Dutchman’s Gold into the future with the same sweet passion for crafting wholesome products that make a difference.

The company continues to champion sustainable practices through various environmental initiatives. Still headquartered in Carlisle, Dutchman’s Gold operates a working bee farm and a local production facility that crafts a wide range of honey, including standard, creamed, and raw varieties. They also work with beekeepers across Canada—many of whom were trained by Master Beekeeper John himself!

Rooted in Sustainability

Bees aren’t just important for making honey and wax. They also play a huge role in keeping our food supply strong. Along with other pollinators like butterflies and birds, bees help spread pollen, which leads to the growth of seeds and fruits. That’s what makes it possible for farmers to cultivate and harvest many of the crops you see at your local Farm Boy.

With bee populations under threat due to habitat loss and other environmental challenges, Dutchman’s Gold products come with a Bee Friendly Promise. One of the company’s core missions is to support the health and growth of bee colonies. They do this through initiatives that create spaces where bees can thrive. This commitment also upholds high standards in sustainability, environmental care, product quality, and community support. Important parts of the Bee Friendly Promise include the reduction of plastic packaging by over 90%, support of local beekeepers, and a focus on sourcing natural ingredients.

Let’s Plant 2025

Another exciting initiative from Dutchman’s Gold is their Let’s Plant campaign. With a goal of planting 10 million wildflower seeds across Canada this year, every product purchased helps support this blooming cause. The campaign focuses on planting native wildflowers that are well-suited to local climates, helping pollinators thrive in their natural habitat.

“At Dutchman’s Gold, we believe every small act matters—every bottle of honey supports pollinators, local farmers, and the future of our planet. The Let’s Plant campaign brings that to life in a way Canadians can see and feel.”
