A Little History

The Turkey Ontario Tour (TOT)

#TurkeyONTour

At our roots, supporting local farmers is a way for us to keep true to our history and help our community thrive. By doing so, we are playing a small part in ensuring environmental sustainability and locally conscious food practices. Participating in the TOT, is a way to highlight the farmers such as our friends at Hayter’s Farm, who share the same goal of providing wholesome and fresh food to our customers. When we support our community and the businesses around us, we can relish in the abundance of great produce, meat, and other products made right here in our very own “backyard”. Having started in 2017, and being run to this present day, the tour is a great opportunity to let our community shine and for fresh food to flourish!

Hayter’s Farm

The Hayter’s Farm family has been in the turkey farming business for three generations (currently celebrating their 75th year in business!) and they are extremely passionate about delivering sustainable, wholesome, and humanely raised turkey. The care and quality that they have achieved is unmatched and we are truly honored to have them as partners for the Turkey Ontario Tour! Tradition meets innovation with a forever evolving product line and new ways to eat farm-fresh turkey. The Hayter’s turkeys are free of hormones or steroids and the hands-on approach that this farm takes on, is truly inspiring. They are the only farm that oversees the entire process, from raising the birds to processing their own products on-site. On your way past the butcher shop pick up some tasty burgers, kabobs, or pre-seasoned breast for a delightfully easy meal.

Well-seasoned meat can develop great flavour from start to finish. Below are some examples of spices and seasonings that you can use to create wonderfully aromatic, restaurant quality dishes right from the comfort of your own home!

Chef’s Tips

Seasoned Turkey Breast

Dry turkey can strike fear in many cooks who attempt to use this member of the poultry family. Like chicken, turkey is quite a lean meat that requires a little care in order to get the most out of what it can offer. Don’t be afraid! It’s easier than you think. A few adjustments and techniques can have you cooking turkey on a weekly basis in no time.

Tips:

  • Use a meat thermometer to keep track of internal temperature and ensure that it reaches the perfect cook at 165 F.
  • Make sure the pieces of meat are of similar size to make even cooking time and doneness.
  • Season well and add herbs for more depth of flavour!
  • Like any meat, searing pieces of turkey at high heat can seal in the natural moisture.
  • If your turkey is whole, try breaking it down into pieces like wings, breast, drums, and thighs.
    • Follow by seasoning, searing, adding dressings, and roasting covered in the oven.
    • This helps to keep an even cook and seasoning.
  • Sear the meat on the grill for a nice smoky flavour or in a pan for a crisp roasted taste!
    • Add butter and herbs for more moisture and aromatics.
  • Roast your meat with fruits such as apples and pears along with onions, celery, carrots, and potatoes for a wholesome meal that can be cooked in one pan!
    • Add raisins for some extra sweetness and a little bit of stock or liquid to lightly braise and add moisture to your turkey while it’s cooking.
    • Cover with aluminum foil to lock in the moisture when roasting in the oven.
