A BLT sandwich combines cooked bacon, crisp lettuce, ripe tomato slices, and a creamy spread on toasted bread. It has a balanced mix of salty, fresh, and savoury flavours. Quick to assemble, this delicious sandwich works well for breakfast, lunch, or as an easy dinner.
BLT Sandwich
As sandwiches go, the Bacon, Lettuce, and Tomato sandwich (or BLT) has got to be one of the easiest and most delicious. When dealing with something so simple, the quality of the ingredients makes a big difference. For the best taste and texture, we used high-quality Farm Boy produce that gets you closer to the farm and some of our carefully curated Private Label products to craft an incredible sandwich that works for any meal.
How to Make the Best BLT Sandwich
Choose the best tomatoes. For a truly stellar BLT sandwich, you must focus on the tomatoes. Tomatoes that are grown in-season are your best bet for juicy, ripe flavour. Bland tomatoes need not apply for this BLT. When picking tomatoes at your local Farm Boy, you’ll want to choose ones that feel weighty for their size with a slight give.
Season the tomatoes. Once you have your delicious, juicy tomato, you’ll want to amp up the flavour even more so. Do that by sprinkling some sea salt (we like our Farm Boy™ Fleur de Sel for its quality and versatility) and freshly cracked black pepper. These simple seasonings heighten the natural flavours of the tomato and really let it shine.
Select good-quality bacon. For maximum ease and convenience, we opted for our Fully Cooked Maple Wood Smoked Bacon. It’s been naturally smoked for eight hours to achieve that distinctly delicious aroma and flavour and contains no artificial flavours or colours. If you’d prefer to baby your bacon a bit more, we recommend our Double Smoked Sliced Bacon, which is made with simple ingredients.
Cook bacon until crisp. Another benefit to our Fully Cooked Maple Wood Smoked Bacon is that you can heat it in the microwave until it’s your desired level of crispiness. You want nice, crisp bacon that contrasts with the juicy tomato. The interplay of textures is part of what makes a BLT such a standout sandwich.
Select a sturdy bread. Unlike some other sandwiches, the bread in a BLT is more like the vehicle for all the goodness inside. It’s not a starring player, more of a supporting character. White bread is a fine choice for a BLT sandwich, but we prefer our Sunflower Seed Bread for this recipe. It’s just toothsome enough to keep things interesting without overwhelming the other ingredients.
Toast your bread. When it comes to bread, you want one that can stand up to being toasted. Toasted bread is a must in a BLT sandwich, as it contrasts with the other, wetter ingredients inside. This helps avoid a soggy sandwich. A light toasting—enough to make the slices a lovely golden brown—is perfect. If you’ve opted to not use our fully cooked bacon and chosen raw bacon instead, you can even toast the bread in the bacon fat for an added dose of rich, savoury flavour. Otherwise, a simple pop in the toaster will do just fine.
Use your favourite mayo. Some people have very strong feelings about mayonnaise. For this recipe, we like our Farm Boy™ Herbs and Garlic Mayo Spread. It’s rich, creamy, and offers a depth of flavour that really pushes this BLT sandwich into another tier. Prefer some heat? Try our Chipotle Mayo Spread or Sriracha Mayo Spread instead. Whichever you choose, spread it generously on both slices of bread for this sandwich and enjoy.
Layer carefully. There’s nothing more annoying than biting into a BLT sandwich only to yank out a slice of tomato or bacon from between the pieces of bread. To avoid the potential destruction of your lovingly crafted sandwich, we have a solution. Place the green leaf lettuce on the first slice of mayo-spread bread, then layer your tomato and bacon, and then finish with another leaf of lettuce. Tomato and bacon in the middle keeps them, well, sandwiched together and prevents them from sliding out.
Additions, Subtractions, and Substitutions
Is it still a BLT sandwich if you move beyond the B, L, and T? Whatever the resulting acronym, we think any of these additions, subtractions, or substitutions would still result in a craveable sandwich.
Add an egg: A perfectly fried egg on top of a BLT is what takes this sandwich from lunch to breakfast or brunch. That gloriously gooey yolk dripping down onto the other sandwich ingredients? Sign us up! Plus, eggs have protein, which basically makes this a health food choice.
Slice up some avocado: Speaking of health foods, why not layer on some slices of fresh avocado? Make sure it’s nice and ripe and slice it up before adding it on top of that crisp bacon. Sprinkle salt and pepper on top, too, if you like.
Switch up the sauce: We chose our Herbs and Garlic Mayo Spread for its rich flavour and creamy texture, but you can use whatever mayo you like best. Our Sriracha Mayo Spread offers a kick of heat while our Chipotle Mayo Spread is a bit smokier. Or, you can keep things classic and stick with traditional mayonnaise. The choice is yours!
Layer on some cheese: Cheese makes everything better, and that includes BLT sandwiches. For ease and convenience, we suggest our cheese slices. Available in Gouda, Havarti, Mozzarella, Provolone, Smoked Cheddar, and Swiss, you can mix and match or make multiple BLTs to find your favourite combo. All our cheese slices are crafted using traditional recipes and available in resealable packaging to maintain maximum freshness and flavour.
Slice in some radishes: For a bit of crunch and a peppery bite, try adding some thinly sliced radishes. Layer them between the bacon and the lettuce for the best combination of texture and taste.
Make it vegetarian: At Farm Boy, we’re always on the quest to expand our selection to offer products that cater to a variety of dietary needs and lifestyles. While crisp bacon is a key component of the BLT sandwich, that doesn’t mean it has to be made of pork. Our Plant Based Bacon-Style Strips are crafted with plant-based proteins for a tender, chewy texture and a hint of hickory smoke flavour. Cook it as you would regular bacon until it reaches your desired level of doneness and enjoy!
Add some extra protein: This BLT sandwich recipe already has a decent enough amount of protein, but if you’re all about hitting your macros, there’s no rule that says you can’t add even more. While doubling up the amount of bacon used in this recipe is one option, another is simply adding chicken. A cooked, marinated chicken cutlet is a great way to add extra flavour and protein to this sandwich. Ideal for when you want a heftier bite or a more satiating meal (like at dinner), a tender piece of seasoned chicken is a great addition to this simple, classic sandwich.
