The Category Manager is responsible for the strategic growth of the department, through research, negotiating and purchasing of all products for resale or use at retail. The mandate of the Category Manager is to deliver a high quality product, at the best possible value for the customer, and which maximized the sales and profitability of the Company. The performance of the duties must ensure a quality service approach to all employees, customers and suppliers. All responsibilities must be performed in a manner consistent with the Farm Boy vision, mission, and the Farm Boy Way.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Analyze sales history, advertising success, product movement and overall category management and set objectives to meet overall sales and profit targets
2. Negotiate costs and set retail pricing to deliver budgeted results
3. Develop/source new items that represent Farm Boy quality, uniqueness and passion for food
4. Prepare new listing presentations for the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Board of Directors
5. Create and maintain departmental planograms and support retail in execution
6. Ensure new product listing process is followed to ensure accuracy and ease of execution at retail
7. In conjunction with the Retail Team, assist the Store Manager and Department Managers to maximize performance
8. Monitor and analyze all competitive and industry activities regarding merchandising, marketing, assortment, pricing and promotions to develop alternative strategies to maintain and improve Farm Boy’s competitive position
9. Keep abreast of current food trends by attending trade shows, analyzing competition, trade publications, etc., and make recommendations for new product listings
10. Represent the company’s profitability and integrity in negotiating trade agreements and formulating policies with suppliers
11. Participate in and monitor order/inventory control programs to control inventory and maximize quality of products related to the department
12. Coordinate and purchase appropriate labeling and packaging according to government standards (i.e., Food & Drug Act, Consumer Packaging and Labeling Act) for products within the given category
13. Provide leadership through knowledge and expertise, and provide training to Assistant Category Managers
14. Assure compliance with Farm Boy corporate policies and procedures in all aspects of the procurement process
15. May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis

The following skill sets are required for this position:

  • Typically requires completion of a post-secondary program with an emphasis in Merchandising, Marketing or Business Management, plus 3 to 5 years experience in a progressively responsible role working with fresh perishables or grocery items or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A passion for food retailing and people
  • Solid retail experience
  • Sound knowledge of business principles
  • Sound negotiation skills
  • Good knowledge of retail industry and food products
  • Skilled at working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining priorities and a high level of performance
  • Experience in working with various computer software programs; e.g., Microsoft Suite
  • Clear and effective communication style, both written and oral
  • Ability to travel with reliable transportation
