Fresh Favourites: 5 For Friday

week 5

We hope you have a cozy, wonderful weekend. We’ve got slow-cooking on the brain. The menu might include these Slow Cooker Pork Carnitas, a crockpot Beef Bourguignon, this easy Cinnamon Applesauce. Or did you know you can even make hot chocolate in a slow cooker?! Game changer.

Here are 5 of our favourite foodie links from around the web:

  • What it looks like to take a shopping trip to the Royal Grocer (yes – the grocer to the royals, that is.)

  • A chef takes on making a 3 course meal with only…a coffee maker? She’s so clever. Sometimes the thought of making a 3 course menu with my full kitchen.
  • If you aren’t tired of reading about our love of oatmeal yet, how about these techniques from Serious Eats for making the best oatmeal ever.

Every fall, 25 international competitors pack into the community center in Carrbridge, a small town nestled up in the Scottish Highlands, to go head-to-head in a grueling competition that requires daily training, which in many cases they’ve undertaken for much of their lives. The rules are strict, their tools spartan, and the objective grandiose yet humble—be named World Porridge Champion. This must be accomplished with nothing more than oats, water, and salt.

  • And of course, if you are tired of reading about oatmeal, and you’re more of a savoury breakfast person, maybe you should hop on the Nordic mealtime staple: Smorrebrod. Pickled herring, shrimp, boiled eggs, even pork belly, and plenty of herbs!
  • And if you find yourself with company and a room-temperature bottle of white, rosé, or sparkling and need it quickly this weekend, here’s the fastest way to do it! I’m bookmarking this one for the upcoming holiday season.
